George Broun of Colstoun

Biographical Summary

"Son of Sir George Brown of Coalston, was admitted advocate 31st January 1734, and in 1748, appointed Sheriff-Depute of the county of Forfar. On the death of Peter Wedderburn of Chesterhall, he was promoted to the bench and took his seat by the title of Lord Coalston,18th December 1756; and on the resignation of Alexander Fraser of Strichen, was also nominated a Lord of Justiciary 18th January 1765. He resigned the latter appointment a short time before his death, which took place at Coalston on the 6th November 1776."

"George Broun of Colstoun, advocate, eldest son of Jean Broun, Lady of Colstoun, by the deceased Charles Broun of Colstoun, her husband, got a charter under the Great Seal of the lands and barony of Colstoun to himself and the heirs male begotten betwixt him and the now deceased Elizabeth Dalrymple, his wife, whom failing, to the heirs female by the said Jean Broun her liferent of the house and other parts of the subject."

PARENTS: The authors of Genealogical notes anent some ancient Scottish families claim the passage above incorrectly states Sir George Brown of Coalston as George's father. Their version is consistent with Genealogy of Broun of Colstoun and Thornydykes.
