Of Strathfield Saye, Hampshire.
1553-1555 George Dawbridgecourt. Chancery case in Somerset
Will dated 26 Feb 1558, proved 3 June 1559. PROB 11/42B [name as George Dabrichcorte or Dabrichcourte of Stratfield, Hampshire] George Dabridgecourt, son and heir of Thomas, died on 26 February 1559, (fn. 52) having by will dated on the day of his death bequeathed £100 each to his daughters Dorothy and Susan, with the proviso however that 'if it fortune eyther of my said daughters to contracte theymselves in marriage without the consent of my wyf or my overseer, then I will she so misbehavinge herself to be rewarded at their discretion.' (fn. 53)
Monumental Brass at Strathfieldsaye Church inscription in black letter which begins as follows: 'Epitaph[u]m Georgii Dabrigecort armigeri (nup[er] dom[inus] de Stratfeldsay) a filio suo et herede Thoma Dabrigecort paulo post morte cōditu[..] obiit 27 die februarii anno d[omi]ni 1558,' &c. Translation: The Epitaph of George D'abrigecort, Armigeri, (Recently Lord of Stratfelsay), composed shortly after his death, by his son and heir Thomas Dabridgecort. He died on the 27th day of February in the year of our Lord 1558/9 Three things move me (friendly reader) to lament him whose bones lie buried in this place. The first reason for my grief is his filial piety towards his father. The next. that he died before he had completed the full span of life. The third ( pardon me, if a son's affection overcomes my modesty), that he was a good man, and a faithful lover of his country. These things indeed ( for from me, his son, is not strange) I think may avail to move your tears. By me, Thomas Dabridgecort
