About George Davidsohn

George Davidsohn was born in l835. After studying journalism he moved to Berlin where in 1868 he founded the Berliner Börsen Courier, a renowned Berlin newspaper and the first paper in the world that dealt with stock issues. At one point during the late 1870s, when the business was not doing well financially, his younger brother, Robert, purchased the paper from him and was its sole owner for a period of 10 years. It was in the Berliner Börsen Courier where Robert Davidsohn polished his journalistic skills while running its cultural section. However, George remained its chief editor, even after the paper went public in the late 1880s. In addition to managing the business end of the paper and his editorial duties, George was in charge of the music section. Through his paper’s activities he met and became friends with some of the most notable people of the time. Among them were the musician Richard Wagner and his wife Cosima, and the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, with whom he corresponded for many years. In 1876, George founded the Richard Wagner Society in Berlin, of which he later opened a chapter in New York City. In his later years, George Davidsohn contributed generously to the Wagner Societies; they were also beneficiaries of his estate after his death in 1897. Inspired by his uncle, Alexander Rosenberg, and like his brothers, Paul and Robert, George Davidsohn had accumulated a large art collection. It was auctioned off, with most of his belongings, in Berlin after his death in 1897. For several years, George Davidsohn was the composer Karl Taussig's lover, and was his only heir after Taussig's death.
