biographical notes

GEORGE GODFREY, progenitor of the Godfreys of Chatham, MA., arrived in Eastham, MA, before 1661. He and his wife, whose name is unknown, were the parents of nine children, five sons and four daughters, all born and recorded at Eastham between 1662 and 1688 (The Mayflower Descendant, 4:30; hereinafter MD). According to family tradition, George may have been the son of Francis Godfrey, who was in Plymouth in 1637, Duxbury in 1638, and died in Bridgewater in 1666; however, there is no proof of the relationship. Three of George's sons, George, Moses and Jonathan, went to Monomoit between 1686 and 1705, before the name of the town was officially changed to Chatham on June 11, 1712. George Godfrey, the eldest, settled near the shore north of Ragged Neck in 1686. He served as constable, fence viewer and surveyor during the next few years. In 1700, he and William Nickerson were chosen to superintend the building of the meeting house. He appears on a list of heads of families in 1711, but after that time he and his family disappear from Chatham records. He may have joined the Monomoit families who went at that time to Duck Creek (now Smyrna) in Kent Co., Delaware. Moses Godfrey joined his older brother in Monomoit about 1695, settling at Cotchpinicut Neck, Old Harbor. He, too, served as tithingman, fence viewer and surveyor during the next few years. He was on the grand jury in 1705 and served as assessor in 1710, becoming a man of prestige and influence in the community. Jonathan Godfrey, the youngest brother, joined George and Moses in 1707, taking his turn at town service. Moses and Jonathan, but not George, are mentioned in the division of land which took place in 1713/14. Jonathan, spelling his name "Godfre, signed a petition in March of 1716 in favor of Capt. Ebenezer Hawes in the latter's controversy with the Rev. Hugh Adams (William C. Smith, History of Chatham, MA, 1909-46, pp. 104, 141, 159, 168, 190, 221; hereinafter, Smith).
