About Brig.-Gen. George Godfrey
Brigadier General George Godfrey:
He was a private in the French and Indian war (1754–1763). Later rose to the rank of Major, in 1771, and then Colonel in 1774, all before the Revolutionary War (1775–1783). He was the first Brigadier General commissioned in Bristol County, MA, complimented for his service in Rhode Island. He commanded the Bristol County Brigade. He was commissioned Brigadier General Jan. 30, 1776, until July 15, 1781. He was chairman of the committee of correspondence and safety during the revolutionary war. He served as Taunton Treasurer in 1775 and County Treasurer from 1776 to 1791. He was a Selectman from 1789 to 1790. He was deputy to General Court 1770 to 1772, 1779 and 1784. He was Justice of the Peace for many years, marrying 150 couples and also keeping death records. He lived on Tremont St. in Taunton, MA.
