About George Greaves
Button maker, Sheffield
From: http://www.gravesfa.org/gen237.htm
George Greaves (1) was born about 1697 and died 9 Nov. 1760 at age 63. He married Mary Marriott, daughter of George Marriott of Wildon Green, Derbyshire. She was born about 1693 and died in Dec. 1741 at age 48. They only had one son.
He is "said to be descended from the ancient family of Greaves of Beeley" (according to Burke). He may have been a grandson of the George Greaves who married Dorothy (who was a son of John Greaves who married Dorothy Alleyne).
According to Mr. Richard Denno, George Greaves (1697-1760) was a button maker of Lambert St., Sheffield. There was evidence that he was remotely related to the Greaves of Beeley. His son George registered arms in 1782 using the eagle displayed. This George (b.c. 1733) bought Page Hall and was a church burgess. The connection with Beeley was made again through the marriage of a grandson of George (b.c. 1733), Henry Marwood Greaves (1793-1859) to Mary Bagshawe, a descendant of Barbara Greaves (wife of Thomas Bagshawe) of Stanton Woodhouse. This Greaves-Bagshawe family is associated with the city of Sheffield, and also with Banner Cross and Ford Hall. (R-1)
