22 Feb 1854 - George Holyoak, Sr. (b.1799), the "father" of the American Holyoaks, departed Liverpool, England on the ship "Windermere" under the command of Captain Fairfield. George traveled with his wife, Sarah GREEN Holyoak (b.1797), children William (b.1825), Mary HOLYOAK Knowles (b.1827), George (b.1829), Ann (b.1832), Sarah (b.1835), Henry (b.1839), Hannah (b.1841), and grandchild Nehemiah Green Holyoak (b.1848), the son of William (b.1825). [Eli Daniel died at the age of 5 years in England.] The family arrived at New Orleans on 23 Apr 1854. Four days later they began their journey up the Mississippi River by steamboat and landed at St. Louis a few days later. They immediately began their several-hundred-mile journey to meet up with William and George at St. Joseph. Within a matter of days they were to commence the trail at Westport, Missouri (modern-day Kansas City). For this portion of the journey however, William and his family would remain behind. As the journey was about to begin, daughter Mary, fell ill at Westport, Missouri, died, and was buried sometime in May 1854. Whether this was before the family met up with William and George or after is not known. The family continued making preparations for their trek to the Salt Lake Valley and departed Westport, Missouri, 17 Jun 1854 in the Darwin Richardson Company. The trek was difficult and not far into the journey mother Sarah fell ill. She died in June, was wrapped in a quilt, and buried in a shallow grave somewhere in Hamilton County, Nebraska. The family continued on and tragically lost another daughter, Ann, in August. Notwithstanding the loss of three members of the family, their efforts were rewarded with a timely arrival in the Salt Lake Valley on 30 September 1854. Upon arrival the Holyoak family was called upon to settle Iron County in southern Utah. From The Holyoak Family Association, History of the Holyoak Family Travels to the United States. George Holyoak, Jr., son of George Holyoak and Sarah Green, was born at Solihul , Warwickshire, England, on 1 September 1829.
His chances for an education during boyhood days were very limited but he did learn to tan leather and make boots and shoes. He heard the gospel as taught by the Elders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, accepted it and was baptized and confirmed at Warwickshire on 28 August 1843 (28 May in Seventies record).
George Jr. set sail for the United States on a Sunday, 2 February 1851, on the ship "Ellen Marie" in the company of 378 Saints.
The Company arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana, April 6, 1851. George Jr. remained in New Orleans a short time then took a steamer up the Mississippi River to St. Louis, Missouri, arriving there April 16,1851.
Here he stayed for three months with his brother, William, and sister-in-law, Sarah. Ten weeks of the time spent in St. Louis, he was very sick with a bad form of chills and fever known as ague. While George was still sick, William and Sarah went to town for supplies early in the morning so they would be back home before George's chills came on. They had no sooner left than the chills came so hard that he thought it would kill him. Suddenly a stranger came into the room and up to the bed. He seemed to know George and called him by name, asking What he Was taking for the chills. He told the stranger a certain amount of quinine.
The man told George that if he would double the amount of quinine, it would cure him, that the dose he was now taking only warded off the chills for a few hours. The stranger then fixed George a double dose of the quinine which he took. The fever left him and he never had another chill. George always seemed to think this stranger was one of the three Nephites.
From St. Louis, he moved to St. Joseph, Missouri. Here he met Eliza Moore and they married May 29, 1853. On 26 March 1854 William Henry, their oldest son, was born. William Henry, who later married Chloe Rogers, was an actor and performed in the Salt Lake show house. He had a good memory and learned parts well.
Leaving St. Joseph, Missouri, June 1854 in the Captain Camp Company, George Jr, Eliza and William Henry crossed the plains. George drove a team of two yoke of oxen to pay their fare.
They arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah 21 September 1854, after a long and difficult journey. They stayed a short time, then were called to settle in Parowan, arriving 26 October 1854. There George built an adobe house for his little family.
In 1866 George volunteered to go back to Omaha, Nebraska, to help bring a group of Saints across the Plains. His wife insisted that he bring home a second wife. He told her that he was very happy as he was.
Later she insisted again that he bring home a second wife. Again he said, "No. I'm very happy with only you." As he climbed aboard the wagon to begin his trek, she came to him and said, "if you don't bring back a second wife, you might as well not come home."
With the group of Saints was a Miss Elizabeth Ann Fergusen, traveling with her aunt and uncle on their way from England to Salt Lake City. She was already betrothed to a childhood sweetheart, but when she saw George Holyoak for the first time, she knew he was the right one for her and she loved him almost immediately. George courted Elizabeth Ann and finally persuaded her to marry him. They were married in the Salt Lake Endowment House October 9, 1866, and left for Parowan.

   [S216] Patriarchal Blessing.
Brother George, In the name of Jesus of Nazareth and by virtue of the Holy Priesthood in me invested, I place my hands upon thy head to seal upon thee a patriarchal or Fathers blessing, which I place upon Thee, and there shall be realized the fulfillment thereof. Thou hast left thy native land, thy kindred and thy friends, made sacrifice for the Gospel sake, which shaff return unto thee many fold. Thou art in the days of thy youth, Thou must hearken unto the counsels of those whom thy Heavenly Father hath placed over thee in the priesthood, observing the laws, statutes, and judgements of the Lord, thy God. In as much as thou wilt do this, thy life shall be precious in the sight of thy Heavenly Father. Thy days shall be many upon the Earth, thy guardian angel will be around thee, he will not leave, not forsake thee, in his hand thou wilt be born up and delivered from the temptations of the evil one and from all thy enemies. And thou will yet be called to go in connection with many of thy brethren to avenge the blood of innocence of those who dwell upon the Earth. The angel of vengeance will be with thee, and thy enemies shall not be able to withstand Thee. Thou shalt behold the overthrow of many people and the downfall of many cities. Thou shall also preach the Gospel to nations which are afar off. Neither bars nor gates nor prison door shall be able to hold thee. No miracle shall be too hard for thee to perform, whether by land or sea, that thou mayest be able to accomplish thy mission, for both Gentile and Jew shall hear thy voice and many of the scattered remnants of Israel shall be gathered by thee into the new and everlasting covenant. Thou shalt return to Zion bearing thy sheaves with thee.
Thou art of the seed of Abraham of the loins of Joseph of the blood of Ephraim, a legal heir to the Holy Priesthood, which thou shalt receive in due time, that thou mayest be able to stand in thy proper lot and station in the redemption of thy progenitors, many of whom shall be made known unto thee by Holy angels, who shall come unto thee as strangers revealing the genealogy of thy fathers.
Thou shalt become a father in Israel, thy posterity shall multiply and become numerous upon the earth. I seal upon thy head the blessings of thy fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Good order shall rest in thy habitation. Thou shalt receive of the fruits of the earth and of the dews of Heaven and all things needful to render life happy and agreeable.
Thou shalt behold the winding up scene, the coming of the Redeemer, the reign of peace upon the earth, become a man of judgement and decision, receive many blessings and privileges in the temple in Zion. Be anointed a King and Priest unto the most high God. Receive thy crown, dominion, power, and eternal increase. Be numbered with the 144,000, receive thy inheritance with the faithful sons of Ephraim in Zion.
Be thou therefore faithful, yield to no temptation, and these blessings shall be sure unto thee. I seal these upon thy head in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, Even so, Amen.
