About George Porter, Convict "Scarborough" 1790

Convict George Porter was born on 9 June 1768 at Westminster, London, England. He was the son of Edward Porter and Alice Pottinger.

GEORGE PORTER and WILLIAM COOK were indicted, for burglariously and feloniously breaking and entering the dwelling house of Ann Goodall , about the hour of six in the night, on the 21st day of January last, and burglariously stealing therein, six silk handkerchiefs, value 12 s. and a leather slipper, value 2 s. her property

He was tried on 25 February 1789 at The Old Bailey, London, England, and sentenced to death, later to transportation. George was transported in 1789 on the convict transport ship 'Scarborough' from England to Port Jackson, New South Wales, Australia with the Second Fleet. He was sent to Norfolk Island in 1792.

George married Susannah Creech Mely O'Brien, daughter of convict Susannah Mortimer, in 1808 at Hobart He and Susannah Porter had a land grant of 30 acres plus another adjoining 30 acres, one boundary was the Black Snake Rivulet. Black Snake, named by William Mansfield, is now Granton



George Porter was sentenced, on 25 February 1789, to death at the Old Bailey, London, for theft of 6 hankerchiefs & a single leather slipper. After seven months in cells he was offered a pardon on condition of transportation. He was then sent from Newgate to the Scarborough Transport.

In Sep 1791, just over a year after landing at Sydney Cove, he was sent to Norfolk Island. He worked quietly on the island as a gardener and is listed in muster in 1796.

He was a single man when he was among settlers transferred to Van Diemen’s Land on the "City of Edinburgh" in Sep 1808. He was recommended for the land grant and described as having a "good character". He arrived in Hobart on 2 Oct 1808.

About a month after arriving in Hobart he married Susannah Mortimore, (who went under the name of O'Brien), she had sailed with her family from Norfolk Island also on the "City of Edinburgh".
