GEORGE PENN SAVAGE

George Penn Savage was born in Amherst County, Virginia on the 23 dec 1776. He may have been the son of Nancy Penn, daughter of George Penn. Nancy Penn and John Savage were married October of 1775. George Penn Savage left home at the age of 21 for a trip. He ended seeking work at Fort Massac on the Ohio River. He attached himself to the US troops stationed there and enlisted for five years as a sergeant. He was honorably discharged in Sept 1803. He continued his journey southward. A few months later found him at Natchitoches on the Red River (part of the LA purchase). He again entered the US troops and served there until 1807. At that point, he decided to return to his home. He reached there in 1810. His family was much surprised by his reappearance. They had been told that he had been killed by Indians and buried near Crab-Apple Orchard, KY, shortly after leaving home.

On 27 Dec 1812, he married Elizabeth Miller, of Virginia, born 21 Nov 1787. George and Elizabeth had five children: Catharine, John J, Nancy, Wilson, and Margaret. He came to Ohio with his family and located in Montgomery County, where his companion died, leaving him with five email children, on 7 August 1823, he married Miss Catharine Miller of VA, where she was born 1 April 1792. By this union he had five children: Elizabeth, Moses P, Washington, William, and Hannah M Savage. William seems to have died young. Elizabeth (daughter of George & Catherine) died at the young age of 23 in Shelby County, Ohio in 1850. George Penn Savage moved to Shelby County with his family and settled in Washington Township, on the canal. Here he engaged in keeping a public house in connection with farming, which he conducted successfully for several years, or until 1839 when he purchased the farm in section 33. Turtle Creek Township on which he passed the remainder of his days. He died 13 May 1847. His wife, Catharine died 21 July 1852. Much of the above information came from an article published in Sutton's History of Shelby County Ohio in 1883.
