9 Jul 1798 Ross vs Smith O.S. 14; N.S. 5. David Ross complains that in 1753, 24th Oct, under Order of Council granting lands to the Loyal Company, a survey was made of 190 acres for Timothy, Col----, in Washington County, formerly Augusta, in Rich Valley on waters of the North Fork of Holstein River. The Company gave titles upon payment of surveyors' fees and 3 pounds for every 100 acres. Dr. Thomas Thomas Walker, now deceased, had the management of the affairs of the Company, as well as being a member, and he appointed William English his agent. Cole abandoned his land, and then in September, 1768, Joseph Scott and Stephen Trigg paid the fees on the same tract and received a receipt therefor on 16th Jan. 1773. Scott transferred his right to Stephen Ross purchased from Stephen, 18 August, 1775. George Smith was then in possession. The affairs of the Loyal Company were brought before the Surpreme Court, and on 3d May, 1783, the title of the Company to all lands surveyed by them prior to 1776 was established. Answer says (Fisher? Jasper?) Cox first improved the land. The name is probably Jester Cocke.

On the motion of Tobias Smith who took the oath of an administrator with the will annexed prescribed by law and entered into and acknowledged his bond with Joseph Miller and Michael Halfacre securities in the sum of two thousand five hundred dollars conditioned as the law directs - a certificate is therefore granted him for the administration of the estate of George Smith dec'd with the noncupative will annexed in due form. (An interesting note about Michael Huffaker appeared about him in the March 1991 Holston Pathfinder. Clinchburg Community was Started in 1773 by Joyce Coulam. Washington County News, 4 Mar 1971. From Mahanaim to Clinchburg.... In the year 1773 came to this fertile valley a Pennsylvanian German immigrant to settle on unclaimed territory and embed his roots in Virginia. Having received a land grant from "Mother England," Michael Huffaker was soon joined by the family of Stephen Keywood. Survival was their motivation and by 1802 the original Cherokee Indians had given way to other farming immigrants who were attracted to the land. The church was constructed, named Mahanaim (Biblical name translated to mean "Two Armies" or "Two Camps") and the community received an identify. Even now, there are enough of the healthy old timers to keep the name alive before it drifts into a memory. How the name was chosen remains somewhat of a puzzle, and we can only surmise a reference to Huffaker and Keywood. With the character strength of two armies, their descendants remain the cadre of Clinchburg farming history.
The land where the Mahanaim Church now stands was initially part of Michael Huffaker's seven hundred acres, and was given to the Church's trustees in 1802. The possession of the land passed down to the Captain Francis Smith family. Tobias Smith (a nephew of George's), Abraham Trigg, William S. Logan, Joseph Haskew, and William Meadows were among the original trustees to organize the Mahanaim Methodist Church. Michael Huffaker was the father-in-law of George by his second marriage to Sarah Catherine Huffaker. Michael Huffaker was also the father-in-law of George's daughter, Elizabeth who married Christopher Huffaker. Christopher & Elizabeth had a daughter named Rebecca Cawood Huffaker and a son named George Smith Huffaker.

Birthdates of George, Sarah and their children from Esther Jerome who lives in Missouri. Her great grandmother was Catherine Smith who married William Dunn.
