About Gerald Gillett
Gerald “Jerry” Henry Gillett, 84, of Shelby Township died peacefully at home on Tuesday, November 13, 2012. Jerry was the devoted husband of Fran for 63 years. He was the loving father of two daughters, Janice (deceased) and Jerri, grandfather of three cherished grandchildren, Acacia Williams, Joseph and Daniel Svoboda, and loving great-grandfather of Rosalind Thies. Born in Detroit, he was the son of Helen and Joseph Gillett, brother to Donna Hypio, Shirley Martin, and Helen Gillett. He graduated from Cass Tech High School and studied drafting at the University of Detroit. Gerald was employed by Chrysler Corporation for almost 40 years as a designer of prototype auto bodies and held several body design patents. The last car design to which he contributed was the Chrysler Sebring convertible built until model year 2006. Throughout his life, he loved to garden and also spent many hours teaching his children and grandchildren how to hit and pitch a softball. He enjoyed being the architectural mastermind whenever the opportunity arose in the building or remodeling of the family homes. He was known for his calm nature, generosity, intelligence, and his endless patience and kindness to others. He is survived by his wife, Fran, his daughter Jerri, his grandchildren and great-granddaughter, and his sister Helen. A private memorial service will take place in spring.
