About Gerhard VII Duke of Jülich and Berg

GERHARD VII Duke of Jülich and Berg

  • Son of Wilhelm IX, Duke of Jülich and Adelheid von Tecklenburg
  • WILHELM von Jülich, son of WILHELM VII Duke of Jülich and Berg & his wife Anna Palatine at the Rhine (1382-Bielefeld 22 Aug 1428, bur Bielefeld Marienkirche). "Wilhelm van Guilge ... hertzouge van den Berge ind greue zo Rauensberg ind ... Geirhart, Adolff ind Wilhelm bredere van den Berge ind gray to Rauensberg" agreed to divide their territories, and the sons were granted, "Hoekeshoeuen ... onsse stat Wipperfurde with the veste van Steynbech ind onsse stat Lenepe with the vesten van Birnfelt ", by charter dated 24 Oct 1397 [1069]. Abbot of Corvey 1400. Bishop of Paderborn 1400, resigned. Count of Ravensberg 1416.
  • Married (1) ([1416]%29 ADELHEID of Tecklenburg, daughter of NIKOLAUS [II] Earl of Tecklenburg [Schwerin] & his wife --- (-12 Mar 1419). The primary source which confirms parentage and marriage has not been identified.
  • Married (2). [Betrothed ([after 1419]) to JUTTA von Kleve, daughter of ADOLF I Count von Kleve and of Mark & his wife Margareta von Jülich. Wernher Teschenmacher's Annales Cliviæ (1630s) records that "Juttam", daughter of Adolf Graf von Kleve and his wife, which is "Wilhelmo Juliæ duci" after the death of his first wife, editor of the edition consulted quoting no earlier primary source which confirms this information [1070]. This report is presumably garbled in some way if not totally inaccurate. Not only would Wilhelm von Jülich have been Jutta's first cousin, and a papal dispensation for their marriage therefore unlikely to be at that time, but the ruling duke of Jülich was then Wilhelm's brother Adolf.]

Wilhelm & his wife ADELHEID of Tecklenburg had one child:

1. GERHARD VII (-18 Aug 1475). Canon at Cologne 1430, resigned. Duke of Jülich and Berg. The memoir book of Dusseldorf St Maria records the death "XV Kal Sep 1475" of "domini Gerardi Juliacensis et Montensis ducis" [1071].

Married: (1444) SOPHIE of Saxony-Lauenburg, daughter of BERNHARD Duke of Saxony-Lauenburg & his wife Adelheid of Pomerania (-9 Sep 1473). 'Botho's Chronicon Brunsvicensium Picturatum names "Soffya", who married "the Hertogh van den Barge", the daughter son of "Hertoghe Bernd, Hertoghen Ereken sone to Sassen, and ay Here to Louenborch" and his wife [1072]. The memoir book of Dusseldorf St Maria records the death "VI Id Sep 1473" of "domine Sophie de Sassen ducisse Juliacensis and Montensis" and in memorial of "domini Gerardi ducis eius conthoralis" [1073].
