About Geroge Clinton Spencer
GEORGE CLINTON SPENCER Sr youngest child of Isaac was born in Clinton (Benton) 1 Feb 1811. He was a farmer and lumberman. He lived with his parents in the Star & Eagle and took care of them in their old age. He was 41 years old when he married on 15 Nov 1852 in Benton to Marilla Perkins. According to family tradition Marilla was supposed to be an Indian or half Indian. This is probably not true as Marilla’s parents were Theodore W Perkins and Catherine Day. Her grandparents were James Perkins born in Wells, Deborah Trafton born in York, Stephen Day born in Cornish, and Lydia Ann Pendexter also born in Cornish. George and Marilla had 4 children, Georgianna born in 1855 married a Cole, had a daughter Effie in 1876 and probably died before 1880. George was born in 1860 and died before 1862. George Clinton Jr was born 1 Aug 1862 and Ellen May was born in 1870. Some time before 1880 George lost or was forced to sell the Star and Eagle to Asher Barton. His granddaughter Sadie says he put a curse on Asher that his foot would kick himself in the rear. I have a picture of Asher with his foot twisted up to his rear. When I showed the picture to my grandmother Sadie she was very amused and told me the previous story. All 4 children were born in Benton. George Sr died 18 Sept 1895 in Benton. Place of burial of George and Marilla is unknown, but is probably in the Reed cemetery.
