About Gertrude Eisinger

My first cousin Gertrude Eisinger (always known as Gerti), the only child of my father's brother and business partner, was a beautiful child. She lived with her parents above the factory that both brothers owned and managed in the Tenth District in Vienna. After the Anschluss in March 1938, Gertrude and her parents fled to Czechoslovakia. In March 1939, the Germans entered Czechoslovakia, and her parents again had to flee. They left Gertude with her aunt and uncle in Prague and they undertook the illegal and difficult journey to Palestine. Gertrude was supposed to be part of the Kindertransport to England which was scheduled to depart Prague on or about September 1, 1939. Unfortunately, war with England broke out that day, and the train literally never left the station. Gertrude and her aunt and uncle (Auguste and Karl Wessely) were deported to Teresienstadt (Terezin) on July 16, 1942. Her uncle was sent to Auschwitz on Feb. 14,1944 and assumedly died the same day. Gertude and her aunt were sent to Auschwitz on Oct. 23, 1944 and perished on that day. Her parents, Paul and Auguste, arrived safely in Palestine and settled there. There is a token grave stone of hers in the same cemetery as her parents in Israel. Fortunately, I was able to obtain from the Jewish Museum in Prague, copies of the artwork that she produced in Teresienstadt. The book "Fireflies in the Dark" by Susan Goldman Rubin, also mentions her and her artwork.

In loving memory, Frank Eisinger
