About Gertrude Maria Rusbridger

Gertrude Maria Glover, the fourth child of Frederick Augusta Barnard Glover and Anne Reid, was born in Calcutta on 1 December 1855 and christened on 2 March 1856 in Sylhet in Bengal, now within Bangladesh. She was from an illustrious family. Her paternal grandfather John Hulbert Glover had been the Queen’s Librarian in Windsor Castle and her father F.A.B. Glover was a Puisine Judge of the High Court in Calcutta. Although her father remained in India until his death in 1876, by the 1871 census, her mother, twenty year old sister Anna, fifteen year old Gertrude herself and two year old brother Charles were visiting her aunt Adelaide Saunders at 19 Phillimore Gardens in Kensington. In 1881 Gertrude was still living with her aunt in Kensington.

She married Stewart Holcombe Rusbridger in 1881 (ref his notes).

Gertrude was temporarily resident in the Hotel Windsor, Rue Dalpozzo, Nice Alpes Maritime in France on 11 February 1932 when she made her will. However her normal address was given as Fountenay in Creek Road, East Molesey, Surrey on the outskirts of Kingston upon Thames which was only four miles from Berrylands where her former husband had lived with his parents in 1871.

Gertrude died when she was seventy four on 26 April 1933 in Ravenswood Nursing Home, West Farnborough in Hampshire not far from her son Gordon’s house in Aldershot. According to the death certificate, her son informed the registrar. She died of cerebral anaemia and pulmonary congestion, heart failure, and mitral disease and she was buried in Aldershot Military Cemetery in Aldershot in Hampshire in the same grave as her son and daughter-in-law, Gordon and Rosemund Rusbridger.

Her previous address was given as 40 Inverness Terrace in London W1 which is under half a mile from Leinster Square in Paddington where her mother-in-law Sophia Rusbridger had lived from 1891 until her death in 1905. Gertrude left all her money, £2,096 gross (£2,029 net) to her son Gordon with the exception of some small legacies to Gordon’s children.
