"Benedetto and Maria raised their family of ten children in Le Prese, Poschiavo, Switzerland. The primary income is unknown, however, "farmer" is listed as his occupation on legal documents seen in Antonio and Silvio's section of this book.

Minimal employment opportunities for young adults may have contributed to the eventual immigration of four of their children. The deaths of the three youngest children, in such close proximity of their births, were not uncommon.

It must have been difficult for them also to see Antonio, Anna Emilia and Silvio move across the world knowing they would never see any of them again. Maria immigrated following following their deaths.

The Cortesi family was made up of strong willed and brave individuals who were able to persevere through difficult circumstances."
