Judge Sloan was the son of David Sloan Sr. and Margaret Jones. In 1798 in Duplin County, North Carolina, he married Rachel Bryan. Their children were Bryan Whitfield, Eliza Catherine, Susan, Hugh, Hepsibah "Hepsie," Amanda, Margaret, Mary Jane, Nancy Anne, and Gibson Jr.

From Inscription on gravestone of Gibson SLOAN:

Gibson SLOAN, Esquire, died at this residence in Duplin Co.,N.C., Aug. 18,1834, on the plantation where he was born July 19,1775. He was for many years a successful planter, an enlightened and influential member of the bench in the Courts of Justice, the father of a numerous family, a devout christioan and an acceptable member of the Baptist church and being clothed with all requisites pointed out by Saint Paul for the office of Deacon he was chosen to fill that office in Concord Church. Return unto thy rest, on my soul, for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee.

This inscription is in the neighborhood of the Concord Baptist church about four miles west of Magnolia. Now at Red House-Teachey-Ware House.

Wed, 23 Jan 1805: David Carleton, Gibson Sloan and Obadiah Wade with the County Surveyor be a Committee to divide the lands of James Huggins dec'd between the several heirs who claim their distributive share, towit, Sarah Stricklin, Elinor Hines, Elizabeth Huggins and Solomon Huggins and reports a plan to next court and that Peleg Rogers, Contable, convene said Committee and County Surveyor upon the premises.
