Associated with Colgate & Company since graduation; from 1883 to 1896 held various positions, finally specializing in the perfumery division; became member of the firm in 1896; first vice-president 1908-1920, president 1920-25, and chairman of the board 1925-28; director of Colgate-Palmolive-Peet Company since 1928; president of American Manufacturers of Toilet Articles Association 1922-24; also president of Travelers* Aid Society 1912-16, of American Waldensian Aid Society 1925-29, of Orange Y.M.C.A. 1 8 8 5 - 1 8 9 1 Presbyterian Union 1918, and of Quill Club 1914-15; trustee of International Committee of Y.M.C.A. since 1903; treasurer of West Side Y.M.C.A. of New York since 1896; an elder of Rutgers Presbyterian Church, New York, since 1904.

Married June 7, 1888, in Buffalo, N. Y., Florance Buckingham, daughter of Edward Julius and Mary (Hoey) Hall, and sister of Edward J. Hall, '73 S., William C. Hall, '75 S., and Sherman R. Hall, *95 S.
Children: Elizabeth Morse, the wife of Stanley M. Rumbough (United States Military Academy 1909); Florance Hall, the wife of Edwin St. John Greble (United States Military Academy 1909); Grace Hall, the wife of J. Wright Rumbough, University of California ^^-'09; Gilbert, Jr., *22; and Robert Bangs, '24. Mrs. Colgate died February 24, 1920.

Death due to heart disease. Buried in Rosedale Cemetery, Orange. Survived by three daughters two sons, nine grandchildren, and a brother, Russell Colgate, '96. His other brothers were Richard M. Colgate, *77, Sidney M. Colgate, '85, Austen Colgate, '86, and Rev. Samuel Colgate, '91.
