9 March 1563: Charter by David Kennedy of Culean to Gilbert Kennedy son of Sir Hugh Kennedy of Girvanmains Knight and Margaret Kennedy wife of the said Gilbert Kennedy, and (eldest) daughter of the said David Kennedy, by which in implement of the Contract of Marriage entered into between him the said David Kennedy, Janet Kennedy his wife and Margaret Kennedy his daughter on the one part, and the said Gilbert and Sir Hugh Kennedys on the other part, the said David Kennedy dispones to the said Gilbert and Margaret Kennedys in conjunct fee and liferent, and the heirs procreate between them, whom failling the said Margaret Kennedy her nearest heirs whatsoever, the 20 pound land of Culean, in property and tenandry with the manor place of Culean, mill and fishings thereof lying in the parish of Kirkoswald and Earldom of Carrick To be holden blanch of the said David Kennedy and his heirs for payment of 2 pence at the feast of Pentecost yearly - reserving the free tenement of the 20 pound land of Culean manor place and others aforesaid to David Kennedy and his wife, during their respective lives. 2 February 1590: Summons of Declarator of Recognition at the instance of Mr David Makgill of Cranston-riddell Advocate to our Sovereign Lord and Mr David Makgill younger of Cranston-riddell his son, against John now Earl of Cassillis son and heir of Gilb. Earl of Cassillis who last deceased, who was son and heir of the also deceased Gilbert Earl of Cassillis immediate heretable tenant to the King and his predecessors, of the 20 pound land of Culean with the manor place and mill thereof lying in the bailiary of Carrick, and holden by him of the King and his predecessors by service of ward and relief and also against John Lord Thirlestane Chancellor, John Lord Hamilton Sir Thomas Lyon of Auldbar Knight Treasurer, Sir Patrick Vaus of Barnbarrock Knight, Sir Thomas Kennedy of Culean Knight, Thomas Kennedy of Bargany and John Kennedy of Blairquhan curators of the said John Earl of Cassillis for their interest and also against Margaret, Giles, and Katharine Kennedys daughters and heirs of the deceased David Kennedy of Culean, Hugh Kennedy of Girvanmains son and heir of the said Margaret Kennedy and Richard Kennedy in Largs husband of the said Katharine Kennedy for their respective interests, bearing the said Mr David Makgill younger of Cranston-riddell being donator to and having a Charter from the King to him his heirs and assignees of the said 20 pound land of Culean manor place and mill thereof and which had fallen in his highnesses hands by recognition through the alienation of the whole, or greater part thereof without licence or consent of his highness as the Charter of the said 20 pound land of Culean under the Great Seal in favor of the said Mr David Makgill younger, did bear, and therefore he had good and undoubted right and title to raise and insist in an Action of Declarator of Recognition before the Lords of Council against the said John Earl of Cassillis as son and heir aforesaid and his said Curators and also against the other defenders above named prebended possessors of the said 20 pound land of Culean and all others having or pretending to have interest therein, that is to say the said defenders to hear and see the said lands of Culean decerned by Decree of the said Lords to be recognosced to the King, and that the foresaid defenders or any of them shall never be found hereafter to pretend right thereto by whatever infeftment right or security granted to them, but that the same are fallen to and ought to remain with his highness and his donator aforesaid in time coming. 13 May 1592: Charter by Margaret Kennedy relict of Gilbert Kennedy of Girvanmains and lady fiar of the 20 pound land of Culean (See GD25/1/640) to Thomas Kennedy son and apparent heir of Sir Thomas Kennedy of Culean Knight, by which for great sums of money paid to her by Mr David Makgill of Cranston-riddel Advocate to our Sovereign Lord, and grandfather of the said Thomas Kennedy, she alienates to him his heirs and assignees, the 20 pound land of Culean with the manor place and mill thereof, lying in the Earldom of Carrick - To be holden blanch of the said Margaret Kennedy and her heirs, for payment of a penny at the feast of Pentecost yearly. 13 May 1592: Renunciation by Hugh Kennedy now of Girvanmains to Thomas Kennedy son and apparent heir of Sir Thomas Kennedy of Culean Knight, by which for certain sums of money paid to him the said Hugh Kennedy by Mr David Makgill of Cranston-riddel Advocate to our Sovereign Lord, in behalf of the said Thomas Kennedy his oy (grandson) he renounces, quit-claims and overgives to the said Thomas Kennedy his heirs and assignees, all right title and interest which he said Hugh Kennedy had to the 20 pound land of Culean, with the manor place woods and fishings thereof, and ratifies and approves the Charter of the same (No. preceding) granted by Margaret Kennedy his mother relict of Gilbert Kennedy of Girvanmains his father to the said Thomas Kennedy and his aforesaid, in the whole heads, articles, and clauses and obliges him to warrand the same both from his own and the proper facts and deeds of his said Umquhil father - and whereas the merk land of Dunbog, which is part of the said 20 pound land of Culean was disponed by Elizabeth Kennedy relict of [ ] Kennedy of Culean to Umquhil Janet Stewart relict of Sir John Kennedy of Culean Knight her heirs and assignees, and that the right of the said merk land now pertains to him the said Hugh Kennedy as heir of his said Umquhil father, therefore he obliges him to warrand the said merk land of Dunbog to the said Thomas Kennedy and his aforesaid, from the alienation thereof by the said Umquhil Janet Stewart.
