About Glenn E. Singleton
Obituary for Glenn: Glenn E. Singleton of Alpharetta and Talking Rock, GA passed away peacefully on the 20th of April, 2015 after a long decline in health from dementia. Glenn Singleton was born on the 20th of June, 1919 in Duluth, Minnesota, son of the late Secord Singleton and the late Helen Young Singleton.
After his graduation from high school Glenn married Margaret M. Brewer of Duluth, MN in 1939. After their first two sons were born, Glenn joined the Navy in 1944 and was honorably discharged after World War II from NAS, Alameda, CA doing Carrier Aircraft Service Unit duty. After the war he and his wife had another son and two daughters. He started a Floor Covering business in Minnesota and built his family home.
In 1952 he sold everything and moved his family to Lakeland, Florida where for the next 25 years he owned Glenn's Coffee Shop. It was a good business success located in the Marble Arcade Building in downtown Lakeland. However, his wife, Margaret, who was called Peggy, died from asthma in 1971. Glenn was a vital member of the Christian Business Men's Committee which held an influential Laymen's Crusade for Christ at the old Mayhall Auditorium in 1959 and also brought Jack Wyrtzen to Lakeland for a crusade later that year. Dr. Walter Sligh was chairman of the Committee. This resulted in the establishment of the first Word of Life Bible Club using Glenn and Margaret's newly built home occasionally. This ministry then went nationwide and overseas. Glenn was a faithful elder for many years at Covenant Presbyterian Church.
In 1974 after the passing of the mother of his children, Glenn married the former Hope Watson, who was secretary of Covenant Presbyterian for 40 years. Eight years later, Glenn semi-retired to Lake Rosalie, near Lake Wales, Florida. He purchased a 20 foot sailboat which he kept on the lake. But later he fulfilled his most adventurous dream by sailing solo from Ft. Lauderdale to the Bahama Islands including Great Abaco Island.
Soon after the passing of his wife, Hope, in 2004, Glenn moved to live with his eldest son, Gene Singleton, in Alpharetta, GA. Finally in 2014, Glenn was placed in Wildwood Nursing Home in Talking Rock, Georgia. He is survived by his sons, Gene Singleton of Alpharetta, GA, Jim Singleton of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Gary Allen Singleton of Talking Rock, GA and his daughters, Suzanne Kadtke of Colorado Springs, CO, and Connie Banks of Denver, CO. He also has 22 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, and over 10 great-great grandchildren.
