About Godfrey Amos
GODFREY AMOS and his wife MARY DRURY, and 7 of their 9 children arrived in Wellington, New Zealand on the steamship "Stad Haarlem" on 16 April 1872 from Kent UK. There is considerable information on the Stad Haarlem and its passengers in Rollo Arnolds book, "The Farthest Promised Land".
According to information on their death certificates, the AMOS' travelled to Alton shortly after arriving in Wellington. This is supported by information on their children's marriage records. The first to marry in New Zealand was MARY ANNE, Born 1860. She was married by the Rev JAS TORRIF, Presbyterian in her father's home at Kakaramea. She had been living at Carlyle for 18 months prior to this. The date of marriage application was 4 December 1880 which was normally the same or a few days earlier than the marriage.
She married ARCHIBALD ROBINSON PYE then aged 26, a plumber who had been living in Carlyle for 4 years prior. Mr Pye, a "Tin Plate Worker" arrived from Edinburgh on the "Asia" to Otago (Dunedin) at a guess on 27 April 1874 and according to the shipping information he was aged 19. For the years 1898 to 1890 they were living in Palmerston North and it is believed that Mr. Pye died before 1902?
Mrs.MARY nee MOS later remarried and eventually moved to New Plymouth. More to follow......
