Notes for Godfrey Mohun Carey

He was educated at Elizabeth College, 1880-6 ; College No. 2225 ; also at Sherborne School, 1886-91; Scholar, 1887; Exeter College, Oxford, 1891, Scholar; 3rd Class Mods., 1893; B.A., 1896; Assistant Master, Sherborne, 1897-1927; House Master, 1908-27. Was in the School Cricket XI and Football XV, also in the Oxford XV, 1891-4, Captain 1894; played for England, 1896-9; was also in the Cricket XI of Exeter College, Oxford, and University Authentics. Won Bronze Medal in Public Boxing Championships, 1891. In Exeter College Rowing VIII, 1894-5. His work at Sherborne called for high attributes of praise after his death. He was supposedly the model for the housemaster known as 'The Bull' in Alec Waugh's controversial autobiographical novel, The Loom of Youth, published in 1917.

The Daily Telegraph of Friday, 23 Dec. 1927, contained a leading article, headed Two Fine Englishmen,' one of whom was Godfrey.

A Mural Tablet is in the West Aisle of the Town Church, Guernsey.
