About Geoffrey (Gottfried) George Meyerhof
He was the son of Nobel Prize winner Otto Meyerhof and studied civil engineering at the University of London. After graduating in 1938, he worked for several years at an engineering firm before he received his doctorate at the University of London. From 1946 he was at the Building Research Station, where he performed basic research in geotechnical engineering, particularly on capacity of foundations and ground breaking to him a D.Sc. in 1954. Brought in doctoral degree at the University of London. In 1953 he emigrated to Canada and was in Montreal senior engineer Foundation of Canada Engineering Corporation, where he designed, among other things, bridges and buildings. Meyerhof's bearing capacity formulas are known for that also found in various national standards. Later he dealt especially with the load capacity of pile foundations. He was an honorary member of the ICE (2000) and Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Society of Engineering. In 1999 he received the Order of Canada, the Centennial Medal of Canada and the Queen's Silver and Golden Jubilee Medal. In 1991 he received the Terzaghi Award and in 1975 he held the Terzaghi Lecture (Bearing capacity and settlement of pile foundations, J. Geotechnical Engineering Division, ASCE, Vol 102, 1976, GT 3, p.195-228). He was the first president of the Canadian Geotechnical Society. He was more honorary doctorates (Aachen University, Ghent, Technical University of Nova Scotia, McMaster University, Queen's University (Kingston)) He was married twice, most recently with Ingrid Goering Meyerhof, and had three sons.
