About Gottfried-Vilhelm Steinmann

Gottfried Steinmann sündis Tallinnas 15. juulil 1910 Raudteetehaste treiali teise pojana.

Haridustee. Koolitee algas Tallinna 15. Algkoolis, mille lõpetamisel jätkus 1925-1927

Tallinna Tööstusõpilaste koolis, kus ta omandas 1927 kvalifitseeritud töölise kutse.

1928-1930 õppis G. Steinmann Tallinna Kolledžis.

Teenistuskäik. 1926 asus G. Steinmann tööle Tallinna Tehnikumi mehaanikatöökotta õpilaseks.

Sealtpeale on tema töömehetee seotud tehnilise kõrghariduse õppeasutustega kuni

pensionile jäämiseni 1972.

1941 sundmobiliseeriti G. Steinmann Punaarmeesse.

1942-1945 töötas ta vangistatuna

Tuula metallurgiatehases ja pärast vabanemist taas juba sõjajärgses TPI-s.

Selle pika töömehetee vältel töötas G. Steinmann Tallinna Tehnikumis õpilase ja nooremmehaanikuna,

Tallinna Tehnikaülikooli Soojusjõulaboratooriumis mehaanikuna, Tallinna

Polütehnilise Instituudi Soojusenergeetika kateedri õppelaboratooriumis vanemlaborandina.

G. Steinmann osales samaaegselt ka paljudes teadusliku ja rakendusliku kallakuga uurimistöödes.

Olles inimese ja kolleegina alati heatahtlik, abivalmis, korrektne ja täpne pälvis

G. Steinmann austuse ja tunnustuse nii kolleegide kui kogu sõjajärgse soojusenergeetika

inseneride põlvkonna seas.

Oma pika ja eduka töö eest inseneride koolitamisel tänas TPI G. Steinmanni mälestusmedaliga

Mente et Manu.

Ühiskondliku ülesandena juhtis G. Steinmann TPI Soojusenergeetika kateedri ja TU laboratooriumi

ühist Vabatahtlikku Tuletõrje salka ja vastutas õppehoone tuleohutuse eest.

Hr. G. Steinmann jäi alati ustavaks Eesti Demokraatlikule Vabariigile 7. veebruaril 1940

antud vandele.

Gottfried Steinmann was born in Tallinn on 15th July 1910 as a second son into a family of a

turner of the Railway factories.

Education. His education started at the Tallinn 15th Primary School, and after the graduation

from which, from 1925 to 1927, he continued his studies in the Tallinn School for Industrial

Students, of which he graduated from as a qualified worker.

From 1928 to 1930 Gottfried Steinmann studied in the Tallinn College.

Career.In 1926, Gottfried Steinmann was admitted as an apprentice to the Mechanical Workshop

of the Tallinn Technical Secondary School. From there on his work activities remained

tied to the institutions of higher eduction in technology until to his retirement in 1972.

In 1941, Gottfried Steinmann was a subject to the compulsory mobilisation by the Red Army.

From 1942 to 1945, while imprisoned, he worked at a metallurgy plant in Tuula, and after his

release he resumed working in – then already post-war Tallinn Polytechnic Institute (TPI).

During his long working career, Gottfried Steinmann was working as an apprentice and as a

junior engineer in the Tallinn Technical Secondary School, as a mechanic at the Thermal

Engineering Laboratory of TPI, and as a senior laboratory assistant at the Thermal Engineering

Laboratory of the Department of Thermal Engineering of TPI.

Gottfried Steinmann took part simultaneously of various academic and applied research

projects.

Both as a person and a colleague, he was always kind, helpful, correct and punctual and thus

he earned respect and appreciation among his colleagues as well as among the whole postwar

generation of engineers for thermal power engineering.

For his life-long and successful work in training engineers, Tallinn Polytechnic Institute

showed its appreciation by awarding him the commemoration medal Mente et Manu.

Gottfried Steinmann’s public responsibility was leading the joint Volunteer Fire-fighter Team

of the Department of Thermal Engineeringand the Thermal Engineering Research Laboratoryof

Tallinn Polytechnic Institute and being responsible for the fire safety of the study building.

At all times Mr. Gottfried Steinmann remained true to the oath of allegiance he had taken to

the Estonian Democratic Republic on 7th February 1940.
