In 1882, Gottlieb Birkholz, [44 years old], immigrated to Wisconsin from Colmar, a town in the eastern German province of Posen (which is now in Poland). With him were his wife Henriette [44] and a son Ludwig [27] and his wife, Amalia Mathilda (Schmaltz) [25] and the first two of their ten children: Gus [4] and William [1]. Also with them was Ludwig's brother, August. I've been told that they chose Wisconsin because they were told it's forests were like those they left behind in Germany. They settled in central Wisconsin, first near Warrens then near Wilton (all in Monroe County). From write-up by James Birkholz.
