About Gov. William Sulzer, US Congress

William Sulzer was an American lawyer and politician, nicknamed Plain Bill Sulzer. He was the 39th Governor of New York and a long-serving congressman from the same state. He was the first and so far only New York Governor to be impeached.

US Congressman, 42nd New York Governor. He was elected to represent 3 different New York Districts in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1895 to 1912 (the 11th from 1895 to 1903, the 10th from 1903 to 1909, the 16th from 1909 to 1911, and 10th again from 1911 to 1912). In 1912 he resigned his House Seat, having been elected as Governor of New York. He served as Governor from January 1, 1913 to October 18, 1913, when he was removed from office by impeachment due to charges of mishandling of election funds, a charge that is generally believed to have been fueled by Tammany Hall leaders who Governor Sulzer would not bow down to. He was the brother of Alaska Territory Congressman Charles Sulzer.
