Vermont Governor. He was educated at academies in Brandon and South Woodstock and taught school while studying law, winning admission to the bar in 1861. The same year he enlisted in the "Allen Grays," a Brandon militia company, which became Company G, First Vermont Regiment at the start of the Civil War. Ormsbee was elected Second Lieutenant, and served until the unit was mustered out at the end of its three month enlistment. He then enlisted in Company G of the 12th Vermont Regiment and was elected Captain and company commander. His unit fought at Gettysburg, and Ormsbee remained in command until his company was mustered out in 1863. He then began a law practice in Brandon and served as US Assistant Internal Revenue Assessor for Vermont from 1868 to 1872. A Republican, he was Rutland County State's Attorney from 1870 to 1874, a member of the Vermont House of Representatives 1872 to 1873, and a state Senator from 1878 to 1879. Ormsbee was Lieutenant Governor from 1884 to 1886, and Governor from 1886 to 1888. He then resumed his law practice, also serving as President of the Brandon National Bank. In 1891 he was Chairman of the federal commission that negotiated with Nevada's Paiute Indians, and he was US Land Commissioner in Samoa from 1891 to 1893. (bio by: Bill McKern)
