Grace Amelia Maguire (I'Anson)

GRACE AMELIA I’ANSON

Grace was born on Saturday 30 December 1871 in Long Street, Thirsk; the daughter of John and Grace I’Anson. Her birth was registered by her father on 31 January 1872.

When the UK Census was taken on 5 April 1881, Grace was living at 23 Norby, Thirsk, Yorkshire with her parents and nine siblings. Grace was then aged 9 and a scholar.

When the UK Census was taken on 5 April 1891, Grace was living at 424 Jackson’s Terrace, Sowerby, Thirsk, Yorkshire with her parents and four siblings. Grace was then aged 19.

Grace was married on Saturday 30 January 1892 at the Parish Church, Sowerby, Yorkshire to Peter Maguire. She was then 20, had no identified profession and was living in Sowerby. The witnesses to the marriage certificate were John Robert I’Anson (Grace’s brother), Emily I’Anson (Grace’s sister) and Frank Taylor.

Her first child, Grace Isabel, was born in 1896.

On the birth of her second child, John Peter, in 1897 Grace was living at Market Place, Thirsk, Yorkshire.

Her third child, James, was born in 1899 and her fourth, William Kimberley, in 1901.

When the UK Census was taken on 31 March 1901, Grace was living at 8 Sutton, Thirsk with Peter and their four children. Grace was then 27. The children were Grace Isabella (4), John Peter (3), James (1) and William Kimberley (3 weeks). The Census record indicates that all four children were born in Sutton.

When the UK Census was taken on 2 April 1911, Grace was living in Kirkgate, Thirsk (a 3-roomed house) with Peter and their four children. Grace was then 39. The children were Grace Isabella (14), John Peter (13), James (11) and William Kimberley (9). This Census record confirmed that all their children had survived to 1911.

Grace’s daughter, Grace, gave birth to an illegitimate daughter, Christiana Daisy, in 1918. Daisy was brought up by her maternal grandparents until her marriage in 1942.

Grace was widowed in 1929 when Peter died, aged 61. They had been married for 37 years and had had 4 children.

When the 1936 Electoral Register was compiled, Grace was living at 4 Belle Vue Square, Acomb, York.

When the England & Wales Register was taken in 1939, Grace was living at 9 Oak Street, York with her granddaughter, Christiana. She was then aged 67 and employed as a charwoman.

Grace died, aged 92, on Monday 26 October 1964 at St Mary’s Hospital, York, Yorkshire. The cause of death was myocardial degeneration, arteriosclerosis and pernicious anaemia. At the time of her death, Grace had been living at 54 Murray Street, York. Her death was registered by her son, John Peter Maguire. She had survived her husband, Peter, by 34 years. The rear of the death certificate indicates that the sum of 18 guineas was paid out by the Royal Liver Friendly Society on Grace’s death. The life insurance policy had been initiated on 16 December 1929, ten days before her husband’s death.
