Grace Halstead was baptized at 6 May 1597 in Northowram, Halifax, Yorkshire, England, the daughter of Abraham Halstead of Halifax, Yorkshire, England,[1] and Susan Whitley.

Grace was the sister of:

• Susanna Halstead, who accompanied Grace's husband, Michael Barstow, to New England.[1] Susannah made a will on 11 January 1667-8, proved 9 October 1669, leaving bequests to her sister Grace Barstow, to Sarah, the wife of Joseph Child, and to Deborah and Sarah Barstow.[2]
• Jonas Halstead, who immigrated to New England.[1]

Grace was the first of Michael Barstow's three wives.[1] She married Michael at Halifax, Yorkshire, on 15 February 1624/5.[3]

Grace and Michael had no children.

Grace Barstow died by 1635,[1] because on 5 December that year Michael and his second wife, Marcia or Mercy, were admitted to Charlestown Church.[3]

Research Notes

Grace was previously thought to have been Michael's only wife and to have been the Grace Barstow who died on 20 July 1671.[2] This was because Bond assumed that when Michael's wife was named Marcia in Charlestown in 1635, it referred to his wife, Grace, as sometimes the names Grace and Mercy were used interchangeably.[3] However, Michael married a third wife, Grace Walker, the widow of Richard Carver, by 1642, and she died at Watertown on 20 July 1671.[1]
