GALESBURG - Mrs. Grace N. Thompson, 83, 255 S. Soangetaha Road, died Tuesday (Nov. 23, 2010) at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg. She was born April 7, 1927, in the town of Christiana, Deerfield, Wis., to Oliver and Martha Rockne Nettum. She married Dr. Ray E. Thompson Jr. at Fort Atkinson, Wis., Oct. 23, 1948. Surviving are her husband of more than 62 years and two sons, Ray III (and Dr. Jeanie) of Godfrey, and Daniel of Galesburg. A son, Peter, died in infancy. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Ray IV and Christina Grace, and a sister, Helen Radloff (and Richard) of Fort Atkinson, Wis. Two brothers preceded her in death. Grace attended public and Lutheran schools in Fort Atkinson and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She was a longtime member of Galesburg Trinity Lutheran Church and its Martha Circle. She was a member of St. Mary Medical Center auxiliary, the Cottage Hospital Service Guild and the food lift. She was a member of the Knox County Medical auxiliary and chapter HO of the PEO sisterhood. Grace was proud of her Norwegian ancestry and a member of the Sons of Norway. She was an honorary member of the Knox-Lombard 50-Year Club and a member of the Knox College President's Circle. She was an enthusiastic participant in Sweet Adelines and a former member of Prairie Players Theater. She loved music, especially vocal harmony. As a fitness enthusiast Grace loved bicycling and running. For 20 years she ran more than 1,000 miles yearly. As a less than expert skier she suffered broken bones, but loved the company of good friends in the sport. Her energy was directed by her generous, loving and helpful attitude in looking for people in need and she was a devoted visitor of homebound friends. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday (Nov. 30) at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Dr. Tom Larsen officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel and one hour before the service at the church. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Galesburg.
