While the identity of "Grace Jaycox" reported to have been the wife of Jonthan Seaman, is not yet certainly known, the names she chose are ones that indicate a probable relationship to the family of William Jaycocks, son of Francis Jaycocks the original emigrant from Stratford-upon-Avon.

Jaycocks researchers know that this William was born in 1627, and died not long before December 1694. Jaycocks researchers also know of a guardianship proceeding, necessary because there were minor children left after William's death. One of those minor children was named GRACE, (complicating the understanding of just who this other Grace was, born ca 1650, married to Jonathan Seaman). One of the guardians chosen was Nathaniel Pearsall, husband of Martha Seaman. Martha was the half-sister of Jonathan Seaman, (apparently husband of "Grace Jaycox").

The wife of Jonathan Seaman (#3) was named Grace, not Jane".

All on-line sources, including the excellent and comprehensive Rubin site on the Seamn surname, continue to give the wife of Jonathan Seaman as "Jerie or Jane" based on an 1880 NYG&BR version of the 1698 Hempstead census.

In the Seaman Archives I found this message from the NYG&BS, pointedly correcting this, but unfortuntely Mr. Rubin did not correct his on-line informtion accordingly, and still, as recently as an exchange of messages today, appears not to have understood the errors in the 1880 version of the Hempstead census giving the wife of Jonathan Seaman as "Jerie or Jane.

The correct version of the 1698 census gives:

The NYG&BS has clearly corrected the errors in their early version of the 1698 census, in the 1914 article cited below.

I found this in the archives. Unfortuntely Mr. Rubin did not correct the information on his generally excellent site, based on this VERY IMPORTANT message:

The wife of Jonathan Seaman (#3) was named Grace, not Jane (apparently there were transcription errors in an earlier version of the 1698 census listing, which the 1914 version corrects).
