Bobov is a Hasidic group within Judaism with its headquarters in the neighborhood of Borough Park in Brooklyn, New York. It has branches in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, Monsey, New York, Miami, Montreal, Toronto, Antwerp, and London. In Israel Bobov has its headquarters in Bat Yam, and branches in Jerusalem, Bnei Brak, and Ashdod.
Bobov originated with Rabbi Solomon Halberstam in the Galician village of Bobowa, where the bulk of his Hasidim were originally followers of his grandfather, Rabbi Chaim Halberstam, known as the Rabbi of Sanz, or by the name of his books the Divrei Chaim.
Rabbi Shlomo Halberstam (1847-1905) the founder of the Hasidic dynasty of Bobov was the son of Rabbi Myer Noson Halberstam (1827-1855) and grandson of the Divrei Chaim of Sanz (1793-1876), a Hasidic sage of the 19th century whose influence established the groundwork for many other Galician Hasidic movements.
Shlomo Halberstam became an orphan at age eight, and lived with his grandfather, the Divrei Chaim, for most of his early life. He married the daughter of Rabbi Yehoshua of Kaminka. In later life he re-married; his second wife was the daughter of Rabbi Menashe of Drohobycz. His mentors in chasidus were his two grandfathers, the Divrei Chaim of Sanz and Rabbi Eliezer of Dzikov.
He became the rabbi of Bukowsko in 1864, Oświęcim in 1879, Vishnitsa in 1880, where he set up a large yeshiva in 1881 and began to serve as a rebbe (Admor) there. He left Vishnitsa and re-established his Yeshiva in Bobov where he was appointed rabbi in 1892.
He died in the summer of 1905 (1 Tamuz 5765 on the Hebrew calendar) in Bad Nauheim, Germany.
While most of the early yeshivos ("Talmudical academies") originated in Lithuania, the 19th century saw the opening of similar institutions in Poland. The first yeshiva in Poland was established by the first Bobover Rebbe in 1881 in Vishnitsa where he was rabbi then; and it later moved with him to Bobov.
With Rabbi Shlomo's passing, his son Rabbi Benzion Halberstam took the lead as the Bobover Poland.
