About Green Poland
Green Poland's 1888 deposition spells out few facts on his life: "Green Poland, a citizen of Sebastian County Arkansas, whose age is 89 years, and whose Post Office address is Fort Smith, Sebastian County ... was personally acquainted with Andrew Miller in East Tennessse, old Cherokee Nation, about the year 1820." But who was Green himself?
An 1880 census of that Post Office offers details: A black man born in Georgia about 1805, Green married a mulatto woman named Lucinda (24 years his junior) and lived with her and her son, a black man named Philip Van -- born in Indian Territory about 1856. Related to GW Vann, perhaps?
