Death At Sea
AUCKLAND STAR, VOLUME XXX, ISSUE 184, 5 AUGUST 1899, PAGE 6 DEATH OF CAPTAIN NORRIS FULL PARTICULARS The barquentine Pendle Hill put into Sydney on July 27, and reported the death of the master, Captain G. S. Norris at sea. The “Sydney Daily Telegraph” says:- “On the arrival of the Pendle Hill, the chief officer, Mr. R. Patrick, who brought the vessel into port, landed and made a report to the effect that the vessel left Newcastle at 6.30 a.m. on Monday, with 357 tons of coal, and at 6 p.m. that day Captain Norris complained that he did not feel well. He remained below until 9 p.m. when he came on deck. Mr Patrick reported to him that everything was all right. He then requested the mate to let him know at midnight if the wind had changed. Mr Patrick, at that hour, reported all well, and Captain Norris replied, “All right.” The boatswain then came on deck, and the mate turned in. At 4 a.m. the boatswain went to the captain’s cabin for the purpose of reporting to him, but after knocking at his door several times received no reply. At 4.30 a.m. the cook went to his cabin with some coffee but failed to rouse the captain. The mate by this time was again on deck, and he proceeded to the cabin, and found Captain Norris was dead. Mr Patrick thinks that he must have expired between 1 and 3 a.m. The barquentine at this time was about 120 miles east of Newcastle. At daylight Mr Patrick decided to return to Sydney, so that the body might be buried on shore. Head winds were met with on Wednesday, and as decomposition had set in, it was decided to bury the body at sea. At 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday, when the vessel was about 35 miles east-south-east of this port, his body was consigned to the deep, and the vessel then came on to Sydney.” Captain Heays, formerly of the barque Cloud, has been commissioned to take the Pendle Hill on to Napier.
