Griffen was born in about 1558 and was baptised at South Stoke, Oxfordshire on 4 July 1558. The register named him as a son of Nicholas. [1]

In Mar 1577/78 he received a bequest from his grandfather Griffith Barton. [2] As grandfather Griffith had no male issue, Griffen inherited the Barton family estates of "Barre Place" formerly an ancient monastic property. [3]

Griffen married Sarah Payne on 7 Jun 1585 at South Stoke in Oxfordshire. [4]

His will was written on 15 May 1605.[5] [6] He made bequests to:

his daughter Mary her grandmother Payne his daughter Magdalen his son Nicholas his son Richard his son Griffith his son Barton his brother John Higgs his brother in law Henry Atkyns (husband of Alice Payne) his brother in law Matthew Payne

He died in June 1605 and was buried at South Stoke on 14 June 1605. [7]

His will was probated on 5 Feb 1607. [8]
