Royal Württemberg cavalry officer Gustav von Starkloff came from a traditional military family, with his grandfather having served in the Württemberg military forces during the Napoleonic Wars. Starkloff's father was likewise in the service of Württemberg, commanding an infantry brigade during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870.
Starkloff's military service had him working often as a Württemberg officer within the structure of the Prussian Army. He and his spouse Mathilde von Gemmingen- Guttenberg were thus transferred numerous times throughout the Empire. In 1911, he was selected to function as Adjutant General to King Wilhelm II of Württemberg. During the Great War, General von Starkloff was responsible for planning and hosting King Wilhelm's numerous trips to the sites at the Front where Württemberg's troops were serving. General von Starkloff passed away a few months before the War ended when he succumbed to a lung infection during vacation leave at Oberstdorf resort.
