El sábado murió mi suegro, Don Héctor González Gama. Es curioso cómo, después de una década de haberme separado de Adriana, su hija, y madre de mis cuatro hijos, en ella pienso como mi ex esposa, pero en él nunca pensé como mi ex suegro.

El sábado murió mi suegro, Don Héctor González Gama. Es curioso cómo, después de una década de haberme separado de Adriana, su hija, y madre de mis cuatro hijos, en ella pienso como mi ex esposa, pero en él nunca pensé como mi ex suegro.

Nunca fue una relación difícil, al contrario, el deporte siempre nos unió. El día que lo conocí hablamos largo de Fernando Valenzuela, que ese 1981 había tomado por asalto a las Grandes Ligas. A lo lejos, su esposa, Doña Luz María, y mi futura Adriana, veían nerviosas el encuentro, porque el resultado no era seguro. Don Héctor no estaba cómodo con mi anterior divorcio. Pero nunca fue un problema.

Don Héctor nació en una familia de León, Guanajuato, con varias propiedades, entre ellas el Rancho Maravilla, y con una posición económica desahogada. Pero la vida suele poner a prueba a sus preferidos. En uno de esos enroques políticos que solo pasan en México, el presidente en turno, José López Portillo en uno de sus múltiplos saqueos, expropió las tierras y declaró insolvente una financiera que dejó a mi suegro en la calle y con cinco hijos.

¿Su respuesta? Levantarse todos los días a las 4 de la mañana, irse a la central de abastos, repartir fruta y verdura fresca a diversos clientes. Empezó por pagar cada centavo que habían depositado en su financiera. Luego, compró una casa en Las Águilas y empezó un negocio de transporte. Sacó adelante a sus cinco hijos, sin descuidar sus raíces leonesas en épocas difíciles.

Me cuentan en la familia, puesto que no me tocó ese tiempo, que en un abrir y cerrar de ojos, Don Héctor perdió todo, menos la sonrisa, la bondad, la tranquilidad y, sobre todo, el amor por su esposa y sus hijos.

Más de 20 años tuve el privilegio de conocerlo y tratarlo. Me presentó a sus amigos, Don Carlos Roca, el inolvidable Doctor Villalpando y muchos otros. Conocí al ahora director de selecciones nacionales, Héctor González Iñárritu, su hijo mayor, en una cena furtiva, a la que accedió a ir cuando su hermana salía conmigo a escondidas de sus papás.

Alguna vez, en un cumpleaños de Adriana, me prestó las llaves de su casa para entrar a las 2 am, con mariachi y todo. Don Héctor tuvo que escuchar toda la serenata desde el baño de visitas, donde se había encerrado para no despertar a su esposa.

A Alejandro González Iñárritu, el hoy famoso cineasta y el más joven de los hermanos, lo conocí cuando era un jovenazo inquieto, que se fue a conocer Europa en un barco carguero, con no más de 500 pesos en la bolsa. Volvió cambiado y descubrió su talento. Adriana, Marcela y Claudia, las tres encantadoras hijas de Don Héctor, todas exitosas, todas excelentes madres de familia. Ya de los nietos, cuatro de ellos hijos míos y de Adriana, ya no le puedo contar, porque me tomaría otras tres columnas.

Rodeado por todos ellos, arropado por el amor que sembró en su vida, tanto de su familia, como de los que lo conocimos, se fue Don Héctor. En su funeral mencioné lo que debe ser su epitafio: “Héctor González Gama. Jamás alguien habló mal de él”.

I met the now director of national teams, Héctor González Iñárritu, his eldest son, in a furtive dinner, to which he agreed to go when his sister came with me to hide from their parents.
