James Wheaton was reportedly born in 1686, the same day as twin brother Joseph, at Swansea in Plymouth Colony -- only Joseph was recorded in the town book.

James married Hannah Slade/Slead at Swansea in 1715. Had ten children born between August 14, 1717-August 20, 1728

Children, with birth dates recorded at Swansea:

  1. John b. 13 August 1717
  2. Mary b. 8 July 1718*
  3. Sarah b. 17 August 1718*
  4. James b. 7 December 1719
  5. Hannah b. 30 June 1721
  6. Jonathan b. 7 April 1723
  7. Nathaniel b. 9 February 1724
  8. Jonathan b. 10 April 1725
  9. Joseph b. 27 October 1726
  10. Elisabeth b. 20 August 1728

(One of the two asterisked dates must be wrong. See below.)

The probate of James's estate was a protracted process. Administration was granted to Hannah Wheaton, widow, on 21 February 1731/2.[1] She petitioned the court to sell her dower thirds so as not to be "destitute of any thing to support her self and to bring up a many small children." She sold land in 1732 and in 1736, and finally gave an account of the settlement of debts in 1738. This included payments to Isaac Wheaton and to Susannah Wheaton. Division of James's estate was finally ordered and made in 1747, with portions going to each of the above children or their legal representatives.[2] Division of Hannah's thirds was made in 1761, with portions again going to each of the above children.

Research Notes

Death: The death date given here matches the unsourced death date at FindAGrave. No headstone picture is given there, and given the probate proceedings above, it seems to be incorrect.

Children: The clustering of the children's birthdates, especially between Mary and Sarah, might suggest that there were two couples "James and Hannah Wheaton" in Swansea at this time. But the division of the widow Hannah Wheaton's dower thirds in 1761, the portion of James's estate that came to her upon his death, names every one of the children above and no others.[3]

It would seem then that either Sarah or Mary was recorded with the wrong date or else that the transcriber misread the date.
