About Hannah Malinda Jones

Hannah Malinda Miller Jones was born June 23, 1854, in Farmington, Utah, to Daniel Arnold Miller, 1807-1891, and Hannah Bigler Miller, 1820-1905. Her father, being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was a polygamist and had three wives, Clarissa Pond, Hannah Bigler, and Eleanor Williamson. With those three wives he had 19 children. His first wife, Clarissa, who he married on December 29, 1833, and with whom he had six children, passed away in Cathage, Hancock, Illinois, on September 1, 1844. Daniel then married Hannah's mother, Hannah Bigler, December 29, 1844, near Carthage. The family came to Utah in 1848. Daniel married his third wife, Ellen Williamson, March 27, 1857, in Salt Lake City, three years after Hannah was born.

In the 1860 U.S. Federal Census for Farmington, Davis County, Utah, Hannah was listed with her parents and siblings: Daniel A., 50, Hannah, 40, Susan, 19, (half sister). Isabella, 15, Joseph, 13, Emeline, 11, Sarah A., 9, Abigail, 7, Hannah M., 5, David E., 4, Basheba, 3, and Daniel, 1 year old. Hannah's father, Daniel was working as a merchant, and he owned real estate valued at $3,000 with a personal estate of $600. This census lists the place of Daniel and Hannah's birth as New York, and their first two children, Illinois, and the next child in Iowa, with the remainder having been born in Utah Territory.

In the 1870 U.S. Federal Census, Hannah was listed as Malinda Miller, 16 years old, living with her parents and siblings: Daniel, 50, Hannah, 40, Isabella, 23, Joseph 22, Abigail, 17, Edgar, 15, (maybe David E. in 1860), Rosabelle, 12, Daniel, 10, Clarissa 10, Henry, 9, Charles, 8, and Elizabeth Jones, 92, her grandmother. Her father was working as a farmer, whose real estate was valued at $2,500 and personal estate at $800. Daniel and Hannah were both born in Massachusetts. Why Hannah's parents, Daniel and Hanna, were listed as age 50 and 40 in both the 1860 and 1870 census is unknown. It is also strange that they were listed as having been born in Massachusetts in the 1870 but in New York in the 1860 census!

Found no record of Hannah and Daniel in the 1880 census, and Hannah Malinda's father passed away on December 4, 1881 in Farmington, Davis county, Utah. He was buried in the Farmington City Cemetery. Her mother lived for another 24 years and passed away in her 85th year on March 13, 1905. The morning of her death she sat at her breakfast table. Later in the day she realized that the end was near and called for her children and friends. She greeted them warmly and apparently did not suffer pain. She said, "I feel so tired and want to rest."

Hannah had married Elijah Jones in 1872 at the age of 18 years old. By the 1900 U.S. Federal Census, Hannah Malinda Miller, 45, and her husband, Elijah Jones, 50, were listed in Providence, Cache, Utah, with the following children: Elijah M. Jones, 18, Le Roy Jones, 14, Melinda, 9, and Estella, 7. Another son, James Thadias Jones, was born in 1898, but he passed away before his first birthday in 1899. Their oldest child, a daughter, Effie Amelia Jones, born in 1879, had already married Andrew Ephraim Furiman, and was living on her own. However, also living in their home was John Abersoll, 33, who was listed as a boarder from Switzerland. John had come to America from Switzerland in 1882 and was naturalized.

According to this census record, Hannah and Elijah had given birth to 6 children, 5 of whom were still living at the time. Elijah and his parents were born in England, and he came to the USA in 1868 and was naturalized. Hannah's father was born in New York and her mother in Virginia (?), according to this census. Elijah was working as a farmer, and his two sons, Elijah M., and Le Roy, were working as farm laborers, and they owned their own farm but had a mortgage on the property.

By the 1910 census for Providence, Elijah, 60 and Malinda, 56, were living with just their 17 year old daughter, Estella, who was listed as Stella. They had been married for 38 years. In this census, it stated Malinda's father was born in Massachusetts and her mother in West Virginia (?). Elijah was still working as a farmer, and they owned their farm free from a mortgage. In the 1920 census, Hannah was listed as Melinda, 65, with her husband, Elijah, 70, and they were living in River Heights, Cache, Utah, alone. Here Melinda said her father was born in New York and her mother in West Virginia. Elijah was still working as a farmer, but he passed away just six years later on May 7, 1926, while living in River Heights, in his 76th year.

In the 1930 U.S. Census, for River Heights, Malinda, a 75-year old widow, was living with her daughter, Malinda, who was listed there as a 39-year old widow. She married Ezra Lewis Fuhriman in about 1909 at the age of 19 years old. Malinda and Ezra had the following children: Adria, 19, Lewis Ezra, 17, Mark Leroy, 15, and Helen, 13. The first three children were born in Utah and Helen was born in Idaho. According to Find A Grave.com, Ezra L. Fuhriman passed away on February 28, 1920.

In this census, Malinda Jones was listed as the head of the household, and she owned her own home valued at $3,000. The only one in the family working was Ezra and Malinda's daughter, Adria who was working as a sales lady in a knitting factory. In 1939, Malinda Jones Fuhriman married Levi David Curtis in Box Elder, Utah. He was the son of Lehi Curtis and Anna Marie Sorensen and had been married to Ida Amanda Peterson in 1896, Logan, Cache, Utah, and they had nine children, and Ida Amanda Petersen Curtis had passed away in 1933.

Hannah Malinda Miller Jones passed away in Lewiston, Cache, Utah, on March 27, 1940, from chronic myocarditis and senility at the age of 85. Her usual residence at the time of her death was River Heights, Cache, Utah. According to her death certificate, she had lived in that community for three months prior to her death, however, we know she was living there as early as 1930, according to that year's census record. Her husband, Elijah, was the first son and second child of Jeremiah Jones and Ann Johnson. Hannah and Elijah had six children, Effie Amelia Jones, 1879-1958, Elijah Miller Jones, 1881-1947, Leroy Jones, 1886-1978, Melinda Jones, 1890-1974, Estella Jones Pickett, 1892 to 1919, and James Thadias Jones, 1898-1899.
