notes

her father's will, 18 Jul 1682, names her as daughter Lestor, to whom he gives 5s. and no more "because shee hath reseived her portion alredy as will appear by a reseipt given in her hand."12,2 Caulkins also mentions, without a date, the baptism of "Widow Lester from the church at Concord," by Rev. Simon Bradstreet Jr., who was New London's minister from 1670-1683.13

  •      "Widow Anna Willey, sometime wife to Andrew Lester, Sen., deceased," died in 1692.14

According to Savage, she died without children before her father Thomas (1667). Shattuck says she was the 2d wife of Thomas Fox, with issue through one son, Eliphalet, and descendants in New Hampshire. Both are incorrect. Eliphalet was Thomas Fox's son by his 1st wife Rebecca.15,16

Genealogical Problems

Parentage

It was not until 1978 that the question of Hannah's parentage was settled. In 1977 John Brooks Threlfall, "Thomas Brooks of Watertown and Concord," (link to AmericanAncestors.org — a subscription web site)<ref>John Brooks Threlfall, "Thomas Brooks of Watertown and Concord," The American Genealogist, 53 (1977): 94–100</ref>, showed that Hannah wasn't a daughter of Brooks-441|Capt. Thomas Brooks (1595–1667) of Watertown and Concord, Mass., rather he suggested that she was probably a daughter of Brooks-178|Henry Brooks (c.1592–1683) of Concord and Woburn, Mass., perhaps a brother of Capt. Thomas Brooks. It was this same John Brooks Threlfall who later identified the correct parents and grandparents of Henry Brooks (c.1592–1683) of Concord and Woburn, Mass., and Brooks-441|Capt. Thomas Brooks (1595–1667) of Watertown, and Concord, Mass., publishing in 1998 in Supplement 3to his Ancestry of My Children<ref>John Brooks Threlfall, comp., The Ancestry of My Children: Anna Maarit Threlfall, John HyyrylainenThrelfall, Margaret Ellen Threlfall, Robert Andrews Threlfall, 3 vols. and 4 supps., (Madison, Wisc.: the compiler, 1970–2000), Supp. 3</ref>. See Brooks-178|Henry Brooks (c.1592–1683) or Brooks-441|Capt. Thomas Brooks (1595–1667) for more information. Miriam Brightman Eddy, "Thomas, Henry and Hannah Brooks of Concord," (link to AmericanAncestors.org — a subscription web site)<ref>Miriam Brightman Eddy, "Thomas, Henry and Hannah Brooks of Concord," The American Genealogist, 54 (1978): 234–235</ref> was able to reconstruct the entire life of Hannah (Brooks) (Fox) (Lester) Willey (c.1620–1692), thereby revealing that it was Hannah who was named as, "daughter Lestor" in Henry Brooks' 1682 will.

Concord was founded in the year 1635 but the Vital Records begin in 1640. Henry Brooks, father of Hannah (Brooks) Fox-Lestor-Willey was named in his Will of 1683 but he referred to her as "my daughter Lestor" which was a mystery for many years to many genealogists and historians. Henry left her "5 shillings and no more because she hath received her portion already as will appear by a resaite (receipt) under her hand" (See Middlesex County Probate RecordsHenry Brooks of Woburn (packet #2,835.)
