He emigrated to Pennsylvania with many brothers. Some of his brothers were captured by the Indians. He is listed as a resident of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He arrived in America on October 11, 1732 among the Palatines imported on the ship "Pleasant", J. Morris, Master from Rotterdam, last from Deal, numbering in all 150 passengers. The Palatines came from the region of the Rhine in Germany. Several of his children were carried off by the Indians.

Adelaide L. Fries, Records Of The Moravians In North Carolina. 11 vols. 19 20-69.

In the diary of the Moravian, George Soelle, dated Aug 1772, he spea ks of "an old Dunkard" who "began to discuss Infant Baptism," warning Soel le against it. From the Friedberg Diary, May 1776, an unmarried woman ask ed about the baptism of her child and on the way to the church the minist er met "an old Dunkard, father of the above-mentioned woman." I believe th is old Dunkard is then identified in the Bethania

Diary of April 8, 1777 as "The old Dunkard, Adam Schillig, call ed on us on his way to New River; he was very friendly." In this same Diar y, same year, on June 2 the Pastor mentions on a visit to the German settl ement on the Reedy Fork, a service was held at Christmann's and he specifi cally mentions the attendance of "the old Dunkard, Adam Schillig." In t he Salem Diary of May 10, 1778, "An old Dunkard, Scheffig, called on Br. G raff; he came from Haw River yesterday with Jacob Christmann, Sr."

In the extracts from the Report of the Visit in Stinking Quarter, between Reedy Fork, Trevisons Creek and Christoph Reich's on Haw River, from 26 th to 30th July 1782, written by C. L. Benzien, we find "the following heads of families I have seen on my trip to Reedy Fork" included "Adam Schillig … the well-known Dunkard."

In the court minutes of Guilford Co., NC, we find the marriage bonds for f our of Adam Shelley's children between 1775 and 1780. Adam Shelley signed by mark "A S" on the bonds for his daughters Katherine and Mary in 1779 and 1780. In the Guilford Co. Court Minutes #23 page E, 20 May 1782, Pleas & Quarter Sessions we find the name of Adam Shelly and also in 1787 #3 12 page MMM, John Smith prvd deed from Peter

Shelley & Adam Shelley to James Warnock, 200 acres.

The deed books for Guilford Co. never list a deed for Adam Shelley and he does not have a grant recorded from the State Land Office. He is mentioned in the deeds when others are stating their boundaries. In Deed Book B:358, 14 Oct 1783, Hugh Lynch located 308 acres on Haw River where the description includes "to a corner of Adam Shelley's House." Then in 1784, this same 308 acres is sold to Peter Shelley and the boundary is mentioned again "corner of Adam Shelly's house." Peter Shelly then sells 52 acres in 1785 to his brother-in-law, John Smith, " part of a tract of land that Adam Shelly bought of Hugh Lynch." Peter Shelly and Adam Shelly both sign a deed for 200 acres to James Warnock dated 1 784 and recorded 1787. John and Catherine Smith and Mary Shelly witness the deed. Abraham Shelly located a state land grant of 500 acres in 1789 on Saddler's Branch of Haw River "Be ginning at a post Oak in Adam Shelly's line." That is the last record we find of Adam Shelly in Guilford Co., NC. By 1789 Peter Shelly had moved to Sullivan Co, TN and finally settled in Cumberland Co, KY. Abraham Sh elly moved to Washington Co, VA sometime before 1791.
