Hans Braaten, Byron Area, Dies

BYRON – Hans A. Braaten, 87, of Route 2, Byron, a retired farmer, died today of pneumonia in St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, after a month's illness.

Mr. Braaten was born in Norway April 7, 1880, and 20 years later came to the United States. After a year in northern Minnesota, he moved to Salem Township in Olmsted County and had resided there since. His first wife, the former Julia Brakke, died in 1913. On June 28, 1921, at Byron, he married the former Ella Nereson, who survives.

He also is survived by four sons, Hilman of Rochester, David, Reuben and John, all of Byron; one step-son, Walter Broten of Rochester; four daughters, Mrs. Willis (Ellen) Lubahn of Oronoco, Mrs. Harry (Rikka) Hanson of Hanska, Minn., Mrs. Chris (Anna) Brenengen of Racine, Wis., and Mrs. LeRoy (Luella) Porter of Eyota; one step-daughter, Mrs. Dennis (Amanda) Larson of Rochester; one brother, John Broten of Rochester; one sister, Mrs. Ronnoug Teigen of Norway; 34 grandchildren and 60 great-grandchildren. Three sisters and two brothers also preceded him in death.

Funeral services for Mr. Braaten will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at East St. Olaf Lutheran Church, where he had been a member, with the Rev. Arnold Melorn officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery in the spring.

Friends may call at the Vine Funeral Home in Rochester from 7 p.m. Thursday until Saturday noon and then at the church one hour before services.

Note: I See he was married two time according to this record and the 1920 census, it list him as widowed, and in the 1930 census, he is married to Ella.
