About Hans Heinrich Hürtzil
After their marriage, they resided in Sulzberg with his brother Felix, and both brothers emigrated in the early 1650’s to different parts of Germany. The family changed their name from Hirzel to Hirtzel after they immigrated to Germany, possibly to ensure the continued sounding of the “tz” implicit in the “z” of the Swiss dialect.
His birth place is unknown, but in 1646 he married in Lusslingen, Canton Solothurn, Switzerland and in 1648 he was living in the Village of Balm, Pfafficon Parish, Switzerland. Pfafficon Parish is a county known as Bezirkshauptort (Staatsarchiv Des Kanton Zurich). The family moved from Switzerland to Germany around the end of 1652, settling in the town of Reihen, in the Palatinate District, as did many Swiss Mennonite exiles. Henry likely was a brother of Clemons Hirtzel, who came from Winterthur, Switzerland. He was a Calvinist (Reformed) minister from 1651 to 1670 at Reihen, Kirchardt, Steinsfurt, and Stebbach, Germany. Peter Hirtzel, also from Winterthur and living in Kirchardt in 1658, may have been another brother. Reihen is on the Elsenz, a small tributary of the Nechar River.
There is a Solothurn town and canton in Switzerland, north of Bern, and this is probably the place at which Heinrich and Maria were married. the marriage was also recorded in Pfaffikon, where it is stated that Heinrich was from Balm, and Maria was "of Batterckingen, Bern district." After their marriage they resided in Sulzberg with his brother Felix, and both brothers emigrated in the early 1650's to different parts of Germany.
Between the births of their third and fourth children, in 1652 and 1654, Heinrich and Maria emigrated to Reihen, Kries Sinsheim, Baden, in the Palatinate. After the turmoil of the Thirty Year War, which had seriously depopulated the Palatinate, Swiss families were invited to settle in the area. Included among the families arriving in the area were at least seven families of Hirzels from the parishes of Winterthur and Pfaffikon. These families settled in the baden villages of Reihen, Bretten and Kitchardt. the first Hirzel settlers arrived in the spring of 1651, led by Rev. Clemens Hirzel, a distant cousin of Henrich.
