Dictated by Dad to Arline for Hilda Holstad March 31st 1964.

It was in the middle of November 1893 and cold that we moved from Sheyenne to Greenland. The straw pile what you think we saw burning, wasn’t a straw pile. It was a house that was burning and me and you went to school with the boy that helped his sister get their Mother out of the well, after this guy had set fire to the house and threw their mother in the well, and left her to die down there. But the kids rescued her and the boy’s name was Hado Peterson. But after he got bigger he went to back to his Mother and his Mother and Sister lived over by old Gris Wold, south of Litchville.

After we got to Greenland, Pa mowed hay on the sloughs on top of the ice and that’s what we fed the cattle during the winter. Martin and Ed chased the cows from Sheyenne to Greenland on foot. Hilda, Gina, Annie and William rode in the wagon with Pa and Ma. Pa moved the house during the winter from Sheyenne to Greenland - 24 miles. The neighbors helped him move it on skids.

The Syverson’s, Rude’s and John Lund’s moved the next spring after we had moved to our homestead and they, the men folks, all stayed at our place at one time while they got houses up for themselves. I think Knute Rude and John Lunds with their oxen helped Pa move.

John Lund move his house from Sheyenne. Knute Rude built a sod house. Iver Syverson also built a sod house a year later. Ole and Sever Syverson built their frame house and Ole slept in the south end of the house and Sever in the North end so both were sleeping on their homestead.

Had about three to four sheep that was loaded in the wagon.

This information was taken from a document provided to me by Keith Bjerke in August 2021.

Dad was William Theodore Jordet Erickson, son of Pa.

Arline Kathleen Lueck is William’s daughter.

Hilda Holstad is William’s younger sister.
