About Hans Michael Stumpff, I
Hans Michael Stumpf immigrated from Baden-Württemberg, Germany to America, married Catherine Neff, and settled on the South Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac, in what was Virginia, and what is now West Virginia, by 1744. They had six children, as evidenced by both Michael and Catherine's Wills: Catherine who married Jacob Brake, Michael, George, Leonard, Elizabeth who married Felix Welton, and Mary Magdaline who married Solomon Welton and Jacob Yokum. Hans Michael Stumpf acquired four lots among the twenty along the South Fork (Lots 2, 3, 12 and 13). A portion of Lot 3, including the family cemetery, is now registered with the National Register of Historic Places. It was registered on October 8, 1998, and the corresponding paperwork is available online.
From "The Stumps, Descent of the Four Michaels" by Paul Hardman, (Charleston WV: 1940): "Michael and Catherine [Stump] had been living on Stump Run, a small tributary of the South Fork, named in their honor, for a considerable period of years before any definite surveys were made by Lord Fairfax of the boundaries circumscribed by the tomahawk entry made by Michael Stump."

" 'Sunday 27th. Travell'd over to the South Branch (attended with the Esqr.) to Henry Vanmetriss in order to go about Intended Work of Lots.'
" ...'Tuesday 29th. This Morning went out & Survey'd five Hundred Acres of Land & went down to one Michael Stump's on the So. Fork of the Branch. On our way Shot two Wild Turkies.'
"...Michael Stump, Sr. (1709-1768), received a grant for Lot No. 3, on the South Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac, on 8 Sept. 1749 (Northern Neck Deeds and Grants, Book G, 227, Vi Microfilm).
" 'Wednesday 30th. This morning began our Intended Business of Laying of Lots. We began at the Boundary Line of the Northern 10 miles above Stumps & run of [sic] two Lots & returned to Stumps.
" 'Thursday 31st. Early this Morning one of our Men went out with the Gun & soon Returnd with two Wild Turkies. We then went to our Business. Run of three Lots & returnd to our Camping place at Stumps.
" 'Saterday April 2d. Last Night was blowing & Rainy night. Our Straw catch'd a Fire that we were laying upon & was luckily Preserv'd by one of our Mens awaking when it was in a (_____). We run of four Lots this day which Reached below Stumps.'
"From 2 to 5 April the party surveyed tracts for... Leonard Nass [Neff], Michael Stump,... the Widow Wolf..."
Note that there was at least one other Michael Stump, who had a son named Michael, and lived in Lancaster PA, during the same period of time as Hans Michael Stumpf. Several researchers have completed exhaustive searches for historical evidence to prove, beyond a doubt, when and where Hans Michael Stumpf was born, when he immigrated, when and where he married, who the parents of his bride were, and where his first chid Catherine was born. However, the records just don't present a clear picture, and deductive reasoning doesn't yield a satisfying result either. It is only a family tradition that Hans Michael Stumpf was born in 1709 in Baden-Wuerttemberg. What we do know with some certainty, based on land and deed records, is that Hans Michael Stumpf and his wife Catharine were buried at this cemetery with most of their children.

Hans Michael Stumpf immigrated to America, married Catherine ____, and settled on the South Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac River, in what was Virginia, and what is now West Virginia, before 1746. Hans Michael Stumpf acquired five lots among the twenty in the South Fork Manor, along the South Fork River (Lots 2, 3, 8 and 12), before his death in early 1768. A portion of Lot 3 is now called the "Stump Farm" or the "Stumpf Farm 1749", and is located south of Stump Lane and north of Dumpling Run, along SR 7 - South Fork Road, in Hardy County WV. There is a colorful sign with "Stumpf Farm 1749" on it, posted on a tree, at the entrance. See also stumprunfarm.com for owner contact information.
Lot 3 was registered with the National Register of Historic Places, and It was registered on October 8, 1998, and the corresponding paperwork is available at http://www.wvculture.org/shpo/nr/pdf/hardy/98001471.pdf. By 1775, Lot 3 was owned by Michael and Catherine Stump's son Leonard Stump. It includes the cemetery documented here.

Note that several researchers have published analyses of the historical evidence to prove, beyond a doubt, when and where Hans Michael Stumpf was born, when he immigrated and the ship that he crossed on, when and where he was married, who the parents of his bride were, and where his first chid Catherine was born. However, the records just do not unequivocally present the answers to these questions. Indeed, there may have been several Michael Stumps living in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia during the lifetime of this one.
It may be that Hans Michael Stumpf immigrated with his family, to Philadelphia, on the "Phoenix", on 30 SEP 1743, but was under the age of 16 at that time. If he arrived before he was 16, then he was born after 1727. If he was the same person as this Hans Michael Stumpf and born before 1727, then he did not marry Anna Catarina Neff, on 10 SEP 1739, in Tulpehocken PA (Lancaster County).
The Hans Michael Stumpf who was born on 17 MAR 1709 [old style?] in Eberbach, Germany to Hans Peter and Anna Catharina Stumpff, may not have been the same person as this one, since there are 1744 and 1745 Eberbach tax records which include Michael Stumpf.
It's just as likely that Hans Michael Stump may have been born around 1720, and married Maria Catherine, in Germany around 1740, then immigrated after his daughter Catherine was born in 1741, and before son Michael was born in 1744.
What we do know with some certainty is that Hans Michael Stumpf and his wife Catharine were buried on their homestead with several of their children and grandchildren. This is documented with photos in Thurman Stump's "Michael Stump Sr. of Virginia, 1709-1768", (Parsons WV: McClain Printing Company), 1975.
