"Death of Mr. H. B. Wallace
Mr. H. B. Wallace, familiarly known as "Bird" Wallace, died at his home in this place on last Tuesday morning at 4 o'clock. The immediate cause of death was pneumonia. He was in the 79th year of his age. He raised a large family, most of whom, with his widow, survive him to mourn his loss. He came to Marietta about fifty years ago from North Carolina. He was a mason by trade and took large contracts. When the W & A Railroad was being built, he did a large amount of the mason work at points between Atlanta and Chattanooga. Nearly every business house in Marietta was built under his contract. He was a joint contractor in building the rock wall around the National Cemetery, a structure that will remain almost as long as time itself. He built the county court house before the war and after it was burned he contracted for and erected the one now used for this purpose. He was a member of the Methodist Church and acted well his part in life and has now gone to his reward, which the Righteous Judge will give him for his faithfulness and loyalty to His cause."

My research indicates that Harbird B. Wallace was the second of two sons born to James M. Wallace and Martha "Patsy" Eaves in Rutherford County, NC. Family tradition states that he came to Cobb County about 1842. He was certainly there by 1848 when he appears on the tax roll. He married Martha Johnson 20 October 1845 (marriage bond date) in Rutherford County. His siblings were: Toliver Wallace (1809-1882), Elizabeth (Wallace) Bedford (1811-1886), Ellen (Wallace) McEntire (1816-1863), Martha (Wallace) McGinty (1823-1900), Nancy (Wallace) McGinty (ca1825-?) and Ursilla (Wallace) Eaves (ca1829-ca1895).
