Harriet Cable-Hughes

Harriet arrived in New Zealand in 1842 aboard the 'Clifton" with her family she first married with Wiliam P Cable, he drowned, 1852, it was reported by Mr W Hughes, it is believed that they w ere having an affair and that she was pregnant with Henry Hughes Cable? or is Henry (Canty) William Pinhorne /Pinbrook Cable the father ? William Hughes and Harriet were Married in Mr George's Home , Tinakori Rd , Wellington,

August 1890 A fire at PUKETAPU yesterday destroyed a four-roomed residence occupied by Mrs W HUGHES. The house was insured for £15- in the National Insurance Office, but the furniture, of which only a small portion was saved, was uninsured

Harriet is buried in Block A plot 86, her son William John cable is buried with her, \

Harriet Bicknell was christened at St Mary's Church East Chinnock 28th August 1828. Married at St Paul's Cathedral, Wellington, NZ 21st April 1845 she used a marker as she was illiterate/ BICKNALL]. The marriage broke down in 1850. as given to me by Wendy Keifer who had some contact with the Hughes family there is a book one can get from the library or buy She married William Hughes 8th August 1853. He is born 30th June 1820, Liverpool. He lived in Sydney 3 years prior to going to NZ where he lived just a round the corner from Harriet & William. He died 5th Jan 1885 at Dunedin aged 65, and is also buried at Puketapu. He and Harriet were in a relationship prior to her husbands death. He reported the drowning of William Cable at Montego Bay 25th May 1852. Records show him as family friend. (I have not seen these reports), It must have been a blessing since a child was already on the way. Henry Hughes born 1st Dec 1852 [ lie: I have the B.cert date is end Nov 1852 and they tried to cover it up]. Harriet died at Stewart Island NZ, 27th Dec 1892 is buried at Puketapu Hawkes Bay, NZ . Block A. plot 86. Bitter our family may be. But life is no different today. The Hughes family gave me a new photo of the grave and once I locate it, it will be sent.
