John Richard Carter was born on 4 March 1837 at Jerry's Plains NSW. He married Harriet Whiteman, daughter of John Whiteman and Harriet Vinal, on 8 March 1858 at Fordwich. He was a carrier by trade. He died on 11 March 1925, Leichhardt NSW, at age 88.

Harriet Whiteman was born on 15 August 1840 at Whittingham, Fordwich NSW. She died on New Year's day in 1884 at of Sunstroke, at Narrabri NSW, Australia, at age 43 when her youngest child was only three.
