Obituary

The grave has claimed as its own another of our old settlers in Mrs. J. L. Newman, who, after suffering from a painful and lingering disorder for three years, passed away from amongst us on Saturday last, at the age of 62 years. The deceased lady arrived in the colony with her brother, Mr. H. J. Honeyfield, in the ship Berkshire, in the year 1849, and was married to Mr. J. L. Newman in New Plymouth. Like the rest of the early settlers, the deceased had to encounter many vicissitudes which were inseparable with colonisation thirty years ago; and when the native war broke out in 1860 she went with her family to Nelson for protection, remaining there some years, and the name Newman is still spoken of there with affectionate remembrance. The deceased Lady, for her many good qualities, was very much esteemed, and her children, as well as those to whom she was known, will cherish her remembrance as one whose life was spent in the faithful discharge of her duties as wife and mother. The funeral took place this morning, and notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather was largely attended.
