About Hazel Welker Briggs
Grandma Hazel Briggs always had good meals prepared for drop in visits. I remember in my senior year of high school in 1984 we lived in Idaho Falls, Idaho. I called my grandmother in Sugar City telling her that my high school choir would be performing at Sugar Salem High School. I informed her that I would visit her during my lunch hour break. She was excited to have me visit. When choir let out there was a lot of pressure put on us to stay together, but I walked a short distance to her home. When I arrived, Grandpa was out working in the garden as I approached the house. I waived to him and called out his name. He grabbed the vegetables he had picked and escorted me into the back door of the house. While going between the garage and the house, Grandpa called to grandma "Mom, look what the cat dragged in!" My grandmother who was doing something in the kitchen her face lit up when she saw me and she said "Oh Harold." She went to the refrigerator and started pulling wonderful food out. She was so organized there was a sandwich with lettuce and tomatoes. Jello with fruit in it. I remember they wanted to get some pickles from the cellar which I accessed from a trap door in the floor of the pantry. There were so many foods down there stored up. No matter how many people suddenly showed up there was food for them. I also found some raspberries canned up. I asked grandmother if I could bring some up. She said, "Of course Brian, that would go just fine with vanilla Ice cream which we can have as dessert. I only spent about 45 minutes with them talking and eating, mostly eating. But I will never forget the love and appreciation and warmth of these wonderful grandparents. It seemed best that when I returned to join my classmates, not to mention my wonderful meal since their only choice was cafeteria food or a sack lunch. So in 1985 while living in the dorms in Rexburg, while attending Ricks College, I remembered how they made me feel like I was home with family. I would mostly visit on Sunday afternoons, if they were not home yet I would meet them at church. These are just a few of the precious memories of my grandparents who influenced my life for the better.
